The man who would be king
Jonathan was the Crown Prince of Israel, the king's eldest son, first in line to the throne. And it certainly seems that he was born to rule: here was a man who exemplified true nobility.
A brave warrior and clever military strategist, he was also an outstanding leader who inspired confidence and loyalty. He was popular, bold and unafraid to ask awkward questions. He would offer faithfulness in the face of insult, even physical attack, from those who were supposed to love him the most.
He was also tender-hearted and sensitive.
But perhaps his most outstanding quality was that he was a true friend. He proved himself selfless, thoughtful and utterly trustworthy.
Because of that, his friendship with David is one of the most celebrated in history.
So consider with Jeff this often unsung hero, Jonathan. And may some of his excellent qualities become ours as we journey together through a beautiful and turbulent life.
