CYRUS (the Great) (c. 576–529 BC)
Cyrus was the Medio-Persian king prophesied by Isaiah to be an instrument of divine plan – a kind of ‘gentile messianic’ deliverer of the Jewish People (Isa. 45:1). Inscriptions of the time bear out that he was a sympathetic ruler allowing the Jews to restore their Temple in Jerusalem.
